World Bird Wednesday - Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos

Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos are a common but rather spectacular bird. They can also be a real problem, especially if they start eating parts of your house! (I’m not making this up!)

However, as you can see they are not really very difficult to look at. They are noisy, bright, clever and very, very watchable.

These birds are feeding on split and germinated seeds around a horse feeding area on Magnetic Island in Queensland. Flocks of these birds formed an important part of the soundscape during the day, often flying over in crazed noisy flocks.

More birds from Magnetic to follow!

You can find heaps more splendid birds here at World Bird Wednesday.

  2. these birds fetch a pretty penny in the States as pets. I'd much rather see them in the wild, stealing seeds and eating plants. :)

  5. What did you do to have them put their crests up? They are great fun birds except when they strip a tree of its leaves or demolish the woodwork on your house.

They are great to watch away from home. I tend to be wary when a flock descends on the farm.

  6. Hi Arija - I think the birds had their crests up because they were on the verge of flying away. At that point I stopped moving and the birds stayed where there were. Having said that, these birds did seem to be the "bravest" of a flock of about 20 - most of which had already flown off into a tree out of picture.

I understand what you mean about the damage they can do - but I still like seeing them!

    Cheers Stewart M

  11. Awesome birds Stewart, but then I'm a sucker for cockatoos. I don't know if your description of their rough behavior has influenced my impression but these birds could be the pattern for early 80's punk rockers with bleached out Mohawks!
