World Bird Wednesday - Pacific Gulls
You should have been able to work out by now that I have a fondness for these gulls. These are Pacific Gulls, and as you can see they are huge.
For all their enormousness, they still seem to have a feeling of grace to them – that huge bill can slice through food like a knife through hot butter, but I’ve still seem them flick tiny shreds of seaweed off chunks of fish with the delicacy of a surgeon.
For those of you who like fact and figures here are some: They can grow to by 67 cm in length, have a wingspan of 169 cm and males can weigh in at 1.6 kg – this can be summed up in a very simple way “they’re big”.
You will be able to find more birds at World Bird Wednesday.
You can find the latest post to my other blog by clicking on the Paying Ready Attention image on the RHS of the screen.
Enjoy the birds.
PS: this is the 200th post to my photo-blog!

ReplyDeletePacific Gulls really are HUGE!! I was amazed when I discovered them at Hastings Marina in December... and even more amazed when we couldn't identify them because (as we discovered) they were juvenile.
ReplyDeleteI would have loved to capture the mature adults... so very different from the juveniles!
Great shots Stewart.
Beautiful birds and your photos, too.
ReplyDeleteRegards and best wishes
wonderful seagull images.
ReplyDeletei use to live along the coast of Calif and would see gulls everywhere. then when i moved north and inland to Montana i was so surprised to see them here! i thought they lived hear the 'sea'.
Their beaks are cute:)
ReplyDeleteThose beaks are amazing! I can't even imagine how big the gulls are. Congrats on your 200th post! Thanks for all your visit to my blog!
ReplyDeleteThese amazing gulls would be wonderful to chase. You are right it is "gull week" but then, isn't that true every week? Friendly gulls certainly fill in the scant weeks when rarer birds go missing. Personally I love photographing them in flight, they are natural clowns too, and like you say totally graceful.
ReplyDeleteCheers Stewart!
wow, that is a big gull. And it has a really strong bill too. Nice shots.
ReplyDeleteGood shots of those beauties, and I liked reading about their eating habits. Congrats on hitting 200! Have a great weekend.
