On this walk I bumped into two Long-Billed Corellas (Cactua tenirostris). The were walking through the long grass by the side of the path, eating the seeds from the newly set seeds. At first they were very shy and would not let me get very close at all. In the end they seemed to work out that I was not a threat and they settled down. A few minutes after they let me get in range they were threatened by a pair of magpies and they flew off!
They were great birds to watch - they have a stiff legged walking style - and kind of parrot goose-step really. For a bird of there size (about 40cm) they seemed to be very delicate in the way they harvested the seeds.

the bills don´t seem to be that long. It is the colors that are so intriguing. (ouch, how does it spell?)

ReplyDeleteAn interesting species and good shots of it there Stewart. As you know we don't get any parrot types here unless you count the Ring-necked Parrakeet which has now established a population in the wild.

I do remember looking at your Corella's and thinking how beautiful they were. Your pictures are great, of course. It wasn't obvious how big they were until you mentioned it in your info ... very nice. Nice that you are finding things close to home. We have a dearth of wildlife now because everyone is migrating south. Many of the birds that do winter here are birds that have come down from north of us. I saw my first Junco yesterday and they are a sure sign that winter is near. Great post, Stewart. Have a great week ...
