Macro Monday - Overlooked?

I think that plants like moss, liverworts and, to a lesser extent, ferns are a rather over looked source of images.

For some reason I have been interested in these plants for many years - although I still dont take many picture of them.  One of a long list of photographic resolutions for this year was to rectify this omission.    Woodlands and especially rain forests are great places to look for these plants.

Of course the very places that they grow do not always lend themselves to photography.  They are lovers of dark dampness, places of dripping shade.

These are rather hasty pictures taken while the whole family was suffering from attack from waves of leaches! Under the circumstances I rather like them. (The pictures that is, not the leaches!)

They were taken in a smallish patch of rainforest - Mavista Rain Forest - on Bruny Island, Tasmania.

More to follow as the year turns.

You can find more macro shots at Macro Monday

Enjoy the images.

  7. I have a lot of ferns and mosses (no leaches) near me in my State Park and take them for granted, not realizing they are something special for those who do not have that type on environment close by. Maybe I'll take my macro for a hike this next week.

  12. Everytime I see moss I think of the photographic potential but I've never gotten 'the shot' I'd like. :)
I just saw some out my back window yesterday. You've given me the incentive to at least go try.
Lovely and lush plant you captured!

  13. Yes they are beautiful, and the color of the 2nd photo is not really fully green. I've some share of leech sting too, when we went to the rainforest, but our male companions always have ready cigarette to easily get them off.

  14. Ferns are beautiful. There aren't a lot of them to photograph around here. You'd think they would be everywhere considering all the swampy, boggy, places. Maybe I need to pay more attention...

  15. I've always loved ferns, mosses and lichens, too. Over the years I've tried to get good pictures and mostly failed, but at least I don't have leeches to contend with!

Ewwwwwww!!! I love most creatures, even the ones other people hate, like spiders, but leeches give me the heebie-jeebies!

  17. No thanks on the leaches, but I wholeheartedly agree that moss, ferns, etc. are attractive and make for very good photo subjects. I look forward to seeing more of your Southern Hemisphere specimens as the year goes by.
