It was sitting, motionless on the rock face, not even in a path of sunlight. It did not move a muscle during the entire time we watched it - I suppose it could have been a little cold.
I have no real idea what sort of beast this is - but my best guess is that its a sort of Dtella. If anybody knows otherwise please let me know.

I trawled through any number of skinks but, although some came reasonably close, none was a precise match.

That's the best of being out and about, you never know what you are going to find round the corner. Love your header too Stewart.

ReplyDeleteAs soon as I saw it my thought was Gecko because I think I have seen one similar before on a station I worked on in QLD. So I went web trawling and it is possibly a Northern Spotted Rock Gecko. So your guess of Dtella is correct, not that I knew what that was before ;) Your captured lizard has a great pattern that you have picked up well.

it seems to have a snout on it like a little crocodile!

ReplyDeleteOver the years I've become obsessed with being able to identify everything I stumble across. I'm pretty good with local animals but seeing this guy in the middle of the desert would drive me crazy! He is beautiful though!

ReplyDeleteI do love lizards - there used to be a ton of sand lizards where we lived that I would see on my way to school. That particular sandy bank is no longer there, and sadly, neither are the lizards.
ReplyDeleteHe's very pretty. Probably was cold. We see that with the anoles that live on our deck and porch in Florida. They don't start moving until the sun comes up.
