This is a Multi-spotted darner - I took the image in Kinglake last weekend. Not only do I like the picture, its another example of why I like the web.
I am an absolute beginner when it comes to these insects - but I was able to find help on the web! Splendid.
Also know as Austroaeschna multipunctata is common enough in forest areas near creeks - which is where I found it.

ReplyDeleteI love the Darners ... they are so beautiful and big enough to be able to capture some of the detail. This is a great shot, Stewart. Our common Darner is a Green Darner and it is around my gardens all summer ... I also see them in the woods at the forest preserve. They are great insect eaters, especially mosquitos, so we are always happy to see them.
