Maryport

Maryport is a small, and now rather run down, harbour town on the north west coast of the UK.  For those with a little more feel for the geography of the UK, Maryport is on the coastal fringe of Cumbria.

Strange as a it may seem for a county that is almost synonymous with "The Lake District" this is an old port that earned its living as much through the export of coal as the products of more rural trades.  In fact the whole coast in this area has an industrial tradition that is largely unknown outside of the area.

I'm not sure if any of these images count as "macro" shots, but they are detail shots and I tend to think of them in the same sort of way.

I was drawn to take a picture of the warning sign because of its impending sense of doom - as if something really rather bad could happen at any moment - I think this reflects the current state that Maryport finds itself in.

You can find more (real) macro shots at Macro Monday2 and I Heart Macro. SM

  9. Very interesting photos, Stewart.

My landlady is presently in a long boat with friends somewhere in the west of the UK. She flew out from here last Tuesday night. Her husband flies off this Wednesday night. They're spending about 6 weeks over in the UK visiting family amongst other things. They go over a couple of times a year. They've just bought a little cottage in Orford, Suffolk, which they intend putting on the rental market.

Macros is more than close-ups of flowers and insects...

  12. An interesting place, the watermarks and the flood gates show that is not so peaceful.

  13. Without warning there could be a flood? That is a little spooky. I would not want to park there. My favorite photo is the flood guage markings.

  14. Very interesting Stewart!
"Flood gates may be closed without warning." I guess it's not wise to leave your car parked in the wrong place at the wrong time around there.
    Really nice photo...
