Wild Bird Wednesday 152 - Hoary Headed Grebe

This is the first of three Wild Bird Wednesday's that I need to organise before I head off for work related travel.   So, although the familiar blue button will appear at the bottom of the page - the posts themselves will be rather briefer than normal!

These rather splendid little birds are Hoary Headed Grebes, Poliocephalus poliocephalus (and no, I have not developed a stutter!).  For those of you in the UK, they are about the same size as a Little Grebe, and for those of you in the USA its about the same size as a Pied Billed Grebe.

These birds were all loafing about on coastal pools on Phillip Island, Victoria.

    They do remind me a lot of the Pied Billed Grebes that we have here.

    I have never seen that many grebes in one place -- Seeing even one or two delights me, so I'm very happy with these -- and a teensy bit envious, I must admit! Just something about these guys. Thanks for keeping up the meme while you are so very busy. You are appreciated!

    I like how they're synchronized in their directional dance. They do look like they're just bobbing away, not a care in the world. It's been hot here, a lot of us would like to join them!

    These grebes must be the world's plainest ones. They seem to congregate like the eared grebes do here in the US while in migration. I've seen hundreds of them together.

    Sweet birds! Just little brown waterbirds!

    I always feel sorry for those in the Eastern Hemisphere not being able to enjoy the hummingbirds (per Mick's comment on my post this week). I'm glad at least you were here in the US last year and got to see some! Hope you have had a great trip where you are this time.

    I love Grebes of all kinds even the Hoary Headed Grebe. I had to look up hoary to figure out what it was about the Grebe's head that made it hoary ... so it is a frosty whitiesh grayish head ... hmmm. Well I did see it in the last picture which is awesome and I do suppose they have to find some exotic name for a gray headed bird, so hoary it is. Hope your travels are safe and there will be time for fun (and photos) ... :)

    When we called this little grebes grebe.
    They are also wonderful little grebes and so colorful.

    Where in the world do they come up with these names? I think if I saw this grebe I may not have thought it a new bird. I did that with the Least Grebe once! Have a fun trip!

    In our south Florida neighborhood we rarely see Pied-billed Grebes gathering in flocks such as these.
