Close to home

One of the interesting things about going back to where you were born is seeing the things that you once took for granted with new (or at least older) eyes.

These are some shots taken around the village of Nunney in Somerset - this village is about 20 minutes by car from where I was born, but I never recall visiting it as a kid.  Equally, I doubt that many people just happen upon it either - I feels like a place you have to make a decision to visit.

What struck me was just how small and complex the place was - full of twists and turns, small bridges, old churches and fine pubs.  It even has a castle.

And all of this was so normal that as a kid I never went there!  And now I find myself taking pictures, and wondering why I never found out you could fish in the moat.

You can find more shots from around the world at Our World Tuesday.

  1. It was very nice finding out where you were from Stewart. Beautiful pictures of the village and that castle is very cool. I went back with fresh eyes also, taking everything for granted when I lived there but seeing it all again with fresh eyes.

  2. Not as cool as a castle with a moat...but I never visited the lava flow just north of my home town. Meant to get up that way last time I had a chance...the time just never cured.

  3. Hmmm. I need to go back to my old hometown...someday. Like you I live a long way from where I was born so I'm sure it would look very different now. I'm sure I would appreciate it so much more than I did as a child.

  4. Hello Stewart, it is nice you are able to return to your hometown area. Seeing the place with fresh eyes is like seeing a whole new place. The castle and moat are just cool, I would love to live near there. Gorgeous images and a great post. Have a happy day and new week ahead!

it is a continual conundrum that few folks are ever tourists in their locale. I, on the other hand, am a perpetual tourist and folks are always wondering how I can find certain things they take for granted as something beauteous and entertaining! That is truly a beautiful and entertaining place...

On a slightly different note, as you will be reading this (I presume) on your Tuesday morning, you may like to click through here, as I have a 'see and compare' post of one you made couple of months back.

  11. Hi Stewart,
It is great that you went to see the town where you grew up.
Looks like a really neat place with all the niceties like castles, places for kids to play in - like the moat, etc.
    I enjoyed your photos!
    Have a Great Day!!
    Peace :)

  13. An English village at its best. The heat I can cope with but the humidity in London is something else and don't mention travelling on the Underground in temps of 30+!

  14. Looks like a very quaint little place, and quintessentially English. So many unspoilt unseen areas to explore still, even on your doorstep. Funny how we take things for granted when we are in the here and now. Having moved away from London, I now go back and take pictures of things I ignored every day. It was the norm and so not very exciting at the time.

  20. What a beautiful, charming, wonderful place! I can see a young boy exploring here, and it's a shame you never knew about it then. For me, it's like a dream! I adore the castle ruins! It even has a moat! I am in LOVE!!!! Thanks for sharing your wonderful photos of this sweet little village.

  21. I love old (maybe because I am)and these pictures are a delight. It is fun to go back to where you spent your childhood and see how different your older eyes perceive, if at all. I do understand how it happens that when you live in an area you see less of it than the poeple who travel to you with the intention of seeing all of it, or at least as much of it as they can. In Chicago, there are a myriad of places I have yet to visit, but I keep trying. And, everytime I do go out to someplace new, I am amazed that it took me so long to get there. Fingers crossed I make it to all the places I chose to before time runs out :) Wonderful pictures, Stewart.
