Wild Bird Wednesday 154 - White-faced Heron

This is the third of three Wild Bird Wednesday's that I need to organise before I head off for work related travel.   So, although the familiar blue button will appear at the bottom of the page - the posts themselves will be rather briefer than normal.  A full service WBW will be along next week!

White-faced Herons are just about the most common heron in my part of the world - if there is a statue like figure in the reeds, waiting for fish, chances are it's Egretta novaehollandie, the white-faced heron.

This rather fine specimen was basking in the sunshine at Walkerville, Victoria last year.  And although he did turn his back on me, he was rather cooperative.

    He looks like a Green Heron that got a hold of a can of blue spray paint. Except for the coloring, they could be twins. The Green Heron is very common here and I don't believe we have a Blue Heron of your kind in our midst unless it is down on the southern coast somewhere. We do have a Little Blue Heron, but he looks like a miniature Great Blue Heron and not at all like your Blue Heron :)Are you getting this? So, whatever the case may be ... he is a beautiful bird and it looks to me like you got some awesome shots of him. Have a safe trip home, Stewart. See you for real next week ...

    Great photos of the WF Heron. They are very common up this way also and we frequently see them in the same roost sites as the migratory shorebirds.

    I do wonder how many species of heron and egret there are in the world? A very successful family of birds. This one is very distinctive and attractive. A good poser too - nice shots Stewart.
