Golden Orb Web Spider

I suspect this may not be my most popular post ever!

This is an Golden Orb Web Spider - and it is as large as it looks!  The body is about the size of a normal grape - and they were reasonably common on Lord Howe.  Thankfully, most of the paths on the island are walked often enough that you don't encounter these at face height when walking!  (Trust me, I was thankful for that!)

It's a beauty! Had many of these, as well as several other species, in my own garden in Sydney and was grateful for them - they kept the mozzie population down! YAM xx

  4. Beautiful photo!
I am fairly tolerant of spiders, but I hate walking into their webs.
    Have a wonderful week!

  5. I'm not a fan of spiders. That one would get a huge detour if I saw it in situ. When they appear in my house I am brave enough to smash them. My husband will take them outside. The largest I ever remember seeing was in the Philippines in the early 50s when I would have been less than 7. In my memory it was larger than a man's hand. (My parents were missionaries there.)

  13. If I ever catch the spider that builds its web between my cabin and my car I'll strangle it with its own web. The web is like a sticky rope and as strong as a rope! I walked through it (again) the other day as I was about to go out and I almost ended up a food for the spider! The air was blue as I tried to disentangle myself and remove the web from my hair! :)

There's is an endless battle going on here between that spider and me!

  17. Beautiful capture! I always enjoy those big spiders (since we don't have poisonous ones here) except when I walk into their webs face first.
