No series of posts from the Northern Territory would be complete without some images of crocodiles. Due to a bit of a mix up with identification in the past, some of the best places to see crocs in the NT are on the East, West and South Alligator Rivers! These rivers were given these names by an American Explorer who had never seen a croc, but had seen a 'gator!
The last image here is of a captive croc called Brutus - as you can see he is rather large! Each year there are fatal croc attacks in the NT - often caused by less than thoughtful behaviour by people, and entirely natural behaviour by the crocs. Of course, its the crocs that take the blame!
Interestingly, you can see a radio tag/ beacon on the crocodile in the second shot - he is being tracked as part of a study. I was told the other crocodiles tend not to hang around with him since he got the tracking pack - and the local call him Nigel No Mates!
lucky Nigel. 'Cause who could imagine crocs being all that fun to hang with.
ReplyDeleterocks and lions are animals I find boring. Lions sleep all the time and crocks are ugly. None of them are fun to take shots at.
ReplyDeletehahahah... poor old Nigel....
ReplyDeleteBrutus is indeed a very large croc.
ReplyDeleteSome people have no idea what the wild means in wild life!!! To shoot an animal that does what comes naturally is criminal especially when the person is to blame! Diane
ReplyDeleteGreat photos of the crocs. Funny about poor Nigel.
ReplyDeleteyou can keep those critters. :)
ReplyDeleteNot something I would want to meet in the wild.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots.
ReplyDeleteGreat crocs! Nice photos!
ReplyDeleteThey are amazing animals. It is true that people usually are the blame for attacks.
ReplyDeleteThese crocodiles are just amazing! Beautiful photos, Stewart! Sorry I haven't been posting any birds! :-(
ReplyDeleteInteresting about how the naming of the rivers! I wouldn't know the difference between a croc and a 'gator!
ReplyDeleteThese guys scare me to death. I grew up in south Florida where they were to be seen in pond in every park around. I would never go near them. Just looking at these pictures - which are wonderful - make me squirmy. Snakes and alligators/crocodiles...they are not for me. I am a real wimp. genie
ReplyDeleteInteresting creatures, but I am staying far away from them!

I always confuse the two..I know the difference is in the shape of the snout and I tend to have it backwards...Great pictures..My preferred way of seeing them..
ReplyDeleteInteresting crocodile images.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen a crocodile in the wild.
Greeting
Great photos but I wouldn't be tempted to go any where near them.
ReplyDeletePoor Nigel -- a lonesome existence. I'm no PETA member, but I do hate it when animals get blamed for stupid human behavior. I read a blog by a lady who is a park ranger at Grand Canyon NP and she calls the photographers who get to close to the wildlife 'tourons' (tourist/morons)... very apt.
