Wild Bird Wednesday 227 - Chestnut-quilled Rock Pigeon

Not too many pictures this week - and not too much text either.

I was really pleased to find (or if the truth be told, be shown) these birds when I was in Kakadu.  These birds are Chestnut-quilled rock pigeons.  Rather confusingly their scientific name, Petrophassa rufipennis, means 'red-winged rock pigeon' - now I wish taxonomists would make up their mind's!

This bird has a very restricted distribution, only being found in a small part of Western Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.  These birds were all drinking from a dripping tap in carpark at Ubirr.

Hardly a wilderness experience, but another example of the birdwatching  adventures that can be found in unexpected places!

  1. Hi Stewart. A new one for me. It seems that there are many pigeon and dove species that take readily to man and his environment. Equally there are some that remain difficult to get close to, with this one falling into the first category. Interesting plumage that seems a little nondescript but is in fact quite useful in concealing the bird.

  3. Nice photos. It is interesting that they have such a limited range. Maybe not very adaptable.

  4. Interesting-looking pigeons. So different from any of the pigeons we have here. Body/head shape actually looks more like our doves.

  11. Hello Stewart!:) This is another new one for me, very different than the pigeons I have seen before, and it has unusual but attractive plumage, and I also like the eye stripe. I hope you won't mind my entry for this week, I know it's stretching it a bit!!:)

  13. A handsome, almost metallic looking pigeon ... similar to the Spotted Dove in Thailand but more majestic :) It seems that there isn't an age limit per say om the Visa that my son would need ... he expects to come through the company he works for, but not right away. We are going to lay low and see what happens ... so far it isn't good, but time will tell. Thank you for your help :)
