Still in India this week and still at Sultanpur National Park. This week's bird is an Oriental Magpie Robin (Copsychus saularis).
I good if a little distant views of this rather wonderful little bird - apart from the fact that it was feeding near the floor, this bird reminded me of Pied Flycatchers - and a little research showed that they were in the same family.
This is a common and widespread bird in India - and I take this individual to be a female as it is not as glossy blue/black as the males seem to be. I have just found out that this bird is 'one of India's finest songsters', so its a bit of a shame I did not hear it sing.
I can't help myself when a bird has a name like this - because it is neither a robin or magpie!

This is a beauty!!! It's definitely a bird I'm hoping to see.
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty little thing.
ReplyDeleteNice plumage pattern on this little bird. Our robins in the US aren't Robins either, our Green Heron never look very green to me, and the Ring-necked Ducks do not show much of a ring, but we get by!
ReplyDeleteHello, it is a wonderful little bird! Cute shots of the Robin. Thanks for hosting, enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteYou must be having a great photo adventure in India. Or maybe you're working? Either way, lots of new birds I'm sure.
ReplyDeletethe bird is cute but the name ie weird. Magpie Robin??
ReplyDeleteIndeed a lovely little bird Stewart and thanks for hosting.
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of one of our warblies!...maybe a male Black-throated Blue...
ReplyDeleteHello Stewart,:) It is a shame you didn't hear it sing, but what a wonderful find. The robin is a darling little bird, and you got some lovely shots of her.:)
ReplyDeleteThey couldn't get chickadee in the name?
ReplyDeleteShe doesn't look like a Robin or a Magpie, so what gives? A beautiful little bird for sure and maybe you did hear the song (If they are as common as you said) and didn't realize that was what you were hearing. I do hope you get to go back to this preserve some day. It seems to have been prolific ... a dream come true for a birder :) Have to run ... today is Raptor day for me. I am going every Wednesday now to Springbrook where they have moved some of our birds. That is the place where I was taught how to work with the Raptors and it feels good to be back. Have a great week, Stewart :)

A very pretty little bird!
ReplyDeleteHope you are having a great week
It looks smaller than either of those birds..Pretty though..Hope you are having a good week.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful little bird! Great photos. Yep, it has a really odd name! :-)
ReplyDeleteNice one. I can see why it may remind someone of a robin but I'm confused by the magpie bit :-)
ReplyDeleteA sweet, dainty little bird. In the words of Jackie Gleason - "How sweet it is!"
ReplyDeleteIt's a cute bird even if the name is all wrong.
ReplyDeleteLovely little bird, Stewart! Hope you have a fantastic time in India!
ReplyDeleteLovely... Are you in India Stewart ?
ReplyDeleteYou're right, the name doesn't seem to fit the bird at all, but it is a cutie! Too bad you didn't get to hear it sing. Thanks for hosting!
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful little bird -- so small and round and perfect, it almost looks too cute to be real! Weird to have such a strange name. Thank you so much for hosting; sorry to be so late in commenting ... I was on my way out the door when it was time to link -- I read your post but didn't have time to comment at that time and almost forgot to come back.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely little bird - whatever the name, it is still a sweet bird. The photos are amazing. Thanks for sharing - I do love to see different birds from around the world.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that you find time to squeeze in a little birding.
ReplyDeleteIt's a cute little bird. Nice of him to pose a bit for you...
