More from the parrot family this week. This is a Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) investigating a hole in a tree just around the corner from last week's flock of Eastern Rosellas.
Like most parrots, these birds are really rather smart. They are also noisy, destructive and fun to watch. I assume that I consider them 'fun to watch' because they are not destroying the wires and gutters of my house!
These birds are about 50cm long and can be found all over the eastern and northern parts of Australia. Their voices can not really be described as melodic, but their raucous calls are a really iconic part of the bush soundscape in this part of the world.

I liked this one. One of my favorite shots from Queensland is of a flying Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo. Great shots!

ReplyDeleteI've a soft spot for them. We had a group who came and visited for treats along with the parakeets of an evening and we found that they learned not to destroy the fascias and soffits if they wanted to get any seed or nuts! As you say, bright birds! YAM xx

ReplyDeleteIt seems to me that most things in nature are the way they are for a reason ... so will you please explain to me how a beautiful bird like this has a raucous call ... there has to be a reason, right? Then there is the magnificent eagle who cackles like a chicken. Their call is so unlike thier majesty that movie makers use the call of the Red Tail Hawks in their sound tracks. This is a beautiful bird and your shots are perfection. As for your missing a few posts and comments, none of us are perfect ... but, don't let it happen again, HA!
