Wild Bird Wednesday 287 - Welcome Swallows

When I was in New Zealand last year I came upon these fledged Welcome Swallows (Hirundo neoxena) being fed by their parents.  I seemed not to be able to get decent images of the birds being fed, but I did get these more stationary images.

I cant help but notice that the young birds seem rather content to just wait to be fed.  This may be familiar to all parents!

  1. Cute little swallows! They visit here during migration but none nest nearby. Am looking forward to seeing them in Illinois this spring.

  10. Sweetest name for a sweet bird! I read it at first as if there were a comma between welcome and swallows -- as if you were glad to have them back. Well, you would be wouldn't you? I know I would.

  11. What little cuties ... all of the swallows look alike (except their coloring, of course) and when they are fed by Mom and Dad, they do have a big mouth. My tree swallows can get very demanding when it is time to eat and another sibling is getting fed first. Hope your trip to your wonderful place is still going on and you are still distracted :) Looking forward to your pictures when you get back ...

  18. Your swallows have fledged - mine will return in mid-March and fledge around the the 4th of July. They are among my favorite birds to watch - I have over 8 houses for them to use - am getting a barn swallow house this year.
