The Eurasian Coot (Fulica atra) is not the most colourful bird you will ever see, but I still rather like them.
I used to watch them as a kid while I was fishing - and they may have been in the first 10 birds I ever learnt how to identify. They also occur naturally in Australia, which makes a change for birds from my childhood!
These pictures were taken when I was down at Point Lonsdale last weekend.

Nice images! Your coot is very similar to our American Coot. We did have another rare visitor from the islands, the Caribbean Coot, but the two species were "lumped" into one American Coot.

ReplyDeleteWell you missed the best part of any Coot ... the big feet. They look ordinary until they get out of the water then, va va voom the giant feet show up. Coots are fun birds to watch. they scoot across the water bobbing their heads and acting silly with each other. Our coots are only slightly different than yours, but to be honest I don't remember how they are different. That's what happens when you're an old poop :) Have a great week, Stewart ...

ReplyDeleteWe have lots of coots in Florida. (Some where funky shirts) I love their vocalizations.
ReplyDeleteHer in Minnesota they are known locally as "Mudhens" perhaps because of how they taste?
ReplyDeleteI used to like to watch the coots 'raft' on the Lake in Oregon where we used to have our RV home. ("ours" were a different variety, but close cousin I'm sure) . We see them here in Florida too, so I guess they're a bird that adapts well to wherever they fly.
