Wild Bird Wednesday 310 - Pied Oystercatcher

This is another set of pictures of a pair of Pied Oystercatchers I found on the beach near Coles Bay in Tasmania.

The Pied Oystercatcher (Haematopus longirostris) is the most common of our two species of Oystercatchers in Australia - although at present there is a visitor from New Zealand in the area as well.

I really like the water and sand in the these pictures - and I reckon they sum up my pictures pretty well: less bird, but more environment than some.

  5. Oystercatchers hold a special fascination for birders, and we look forward to seeing Southern Hemisphere oystercatchers when we visit Australia later this year.

  6. I like that the pictures show the bird's behavior -- their habitat . can almost hear that shellfish cracking~! They're handsome birds and their coloring really shows up against the sand and water (what we here on the left side of the US call 'the Coast' )!

  7. Just as good looking as our own. I reckon I could post those as Common Oystercatcher and very few would notice the difference. Thanks for the link-up today Stewart.

  11. The Oystercatcher comes to Finland too, in summer; whereas it does not make nest in Italy - except for a restricted area in the Po river delta.
    Beautiful bird!

  15. I always look at the environment more than I look at the focal point. The background often explains what is happening.

    Good pictures.
