The Masked Lapwing (Vanellus miles) is a visible and often vocal part of the Australian landscape. If they are anywhere in the area you are very likely to know about it, either through their calls or their tendency to swoop people, cats, dogs, horses and such like in the breeding season.
This bird - which was one of a (presumed) pair - was reasonably well behaved, until, shrieking, it jumped into flight.
These pictures were taken last week at Wilsons Promontory, a wonderful national park about 3 hours from Melbourne.

{312 consecutive weeks is a long time! The last couple of weeks have not been that straight forward. At present the net access at home is flaky, Blogger has stopped sending email notifications and I have too much work! All in all, it's been pretty difficult to visit blogs and generally reply to comments. In the absence of cake, messages of encouragement would help - as would suggestions as to how to get bloggers linking into WBW again. Cheers - SM}

ReplyDeleteStewart - I will put this here, as others may also need this assistance... since the upgrading in relation to the Euro GDPR carry on, a lot went awry, not just in Blogger. (Data collection is a minefield!) In order to reset email notification for blogs, go to the settings cog on the dashboard of each blog and select "Email" tab. Here, you will see a largish box which probably already contains the relevant email address you placed originally. Remove this address, press the SAVE tab at top right and exit the dashboard. Restart your computer. Go back to that same tab and re-enter your email address for receipt of email notifications and SAVE again. In a short while, you will receive an email from Blogger asking you to confirm that you wish to continue receiving these notifications. YOU MUST SELECT THE 'SUBSCRIBE' option offered. From then on, comments will come through once more.
I have yet to figure out how to get my scheduled posts to go to G+ as they used to... sigh...
As to getting folk to linky - double check the GDPR upgrade for your provider; it may be making it difficult for folk to link if it demands certain info or confirmations and such like. Only folk under the EU sector see these notifications, but the whole world has to comply. As one here, I can tell you, they are a b***** nuisance. They don't change anything other than to interrupt the flow of usage to give alerts that data is being collected, cookies used and asking for agreement.

ReplyDeleteIt's a wonderful bird - very photogenic. I remember it well and it seemed to be quite common in most regions of the ACT and southeastern NSW. I will look forward to seeing it in Victoria.
