Wild Bird Wednesday 364 - White- Faced Heron

I am basically going to be off line for about two weeks - so I will not be able to reply to comments - but I well get there eventually!

So, this week I have chosen to post some pictures that are mainly not birds - they are mainly plants.  I think that we can forget that birds exist in a place, in a habitat, and that a frame filling portrait can miss the context and character of the bird.

Maybe that's just an excuse for me not getting closer to this White-faced Heron (Egretta novaehollandiae) at my local pond - but I really do like showing birds in the place that they are.

  1. I agree with you, Stewart-- I often try to include relevant habitat in my photos, and also like you I sometimes do not have the choice not to. Now I must apologize for tightly cropping my Rose-breasted Grosbeak thumbnail I posted here!

  2. While upclose portraits birds are nice, I'd much rather see them in their habitat.

  3. It is very valid to show the habitat and it increases the appreciation of the bird.

  10. I often wondered if herons have stiff necks like we get when maintaining that posture for long periods of time...:)jp

  11. I do like seeing the habitat! And they are lovely herons. just a little different from the ones we see. Hope you're enjoying your time off-line as much as I did our vacation. No birds recently though. We're home in Oregon now and i hope to remedy that soon.

  13. Beautiful heron! (But I hate Recaptcha --- I keep failing! Why do they make the photos so fuzzy?)

  15. Hi, beautiful photos of a beautiful bird and exactly where it should be in its natural habitat. Stewart, I wonder would you mind taking a peek at the bird shot in my last post to hazard a guess as to what it is. Looking through my books has not thrown up a name.
