Wild Bird Wednesday 382 - Some waders for Clive.

Last week I found out that Dr. Clive Minton had been killed in a  car crash.  Clive was the originator and driving force of the Victorian Wader Study group, and I was fortunate to have spent a small amount of time in the field with him trapping and banding waders.  I had hoped to do a lot more of that in the future - but it is not to be.

If you Googled 'Citizen Scientist' it would have been appropriate if a picture of Clive had appeared.

The birding world lost an absolute champion last week.

  2. It sounds like birds lost a champion. That's sad. I love the peaceful bird image with one leg. The good news is I'm in a birding paradise right now. I woke up to an osprey on my balcony and went to bed after an eagle flew by my window.

  7. I am not sure where I might have heard the name Clive Minton, Stewart, but it seems to me that I have. In any event, it is a great tragedy to lose a dedicated individual of his calibre. I extend my sincere condolences to you, and in fact to the entire Australian ornithological community.

  9. So sad. He was a champion for birds indeed. Beautiful birds-- i think I can identify most by genus but not all by species, as they have counterparts in North America.

  10. Oh Stewart, how tragic that such a man is gone. When Don Hopkins passed away in August of 2018, I was heartbroken for it was because of an article I read about how he conducted his "observations" of Bald Eagles that made me say, :If it was good enough for Don, then it will be good enough for me." Years passed and in 2018, when I found out he was in a nursing home, I asked his BFF if I could come with him to visit. We "talked Eagles and Hawks" the entire morning. He was the co-founder of HMANA (Hawk Migration Association of North America) AND he kissed me good-bye when I left!!...:)jp

  15. Yes, it sounds like this is a very sad loss for the bird world especially when needing more champions than ever it seems.
Meanwhile, what a collection of beaks!
