Wild Bird Wednesday 519 - Purple Swamphen.

Covid has returned to my household, just in time to ruin a (very) much needed holiday and to banish my wife into isolation in the front room!  This virus is the gift that keeps giving.

I managed to get out for a walk today - although not with a camera - and the Australasian Swamphens (Porphyrio melanotus) were fighting and chasing about near a small wetland.

These are sone pictures I have taken of that species, in that swamp, but not today!

They are one of those birds by which it is easy to imagine the dinosaurs... Sorry to hear the lurgy has hit close to home; over here the rise in infections is again causing concern. But folk just don't want to maintain the precautions proven to work - hands, face, space... Hope your wife recovers quickly. YAM xx

  4. The Purple Swamphen is a beauty, such lovely colouring and shiny plumage. I am so sorry your wife caught the dreaded Covid virus. and your much needed holiday has been put on hold. Most of my family have had Covid, but not me in my bubble, but one has to go out sometimes, but taking all the precautions there is no guarantee that you won't catch it. Really bad luck Stewart. I hope your wife recuperates soon.
    All the best.

  5. We had the Gray-headed Swamphens in Florida. They dig up the roots of aquatic vegetation with their prehensile toes. We had COVID, probably Omicron, go through the entire 6-person household in January. Everyone had at least two shots and my wife and I also had boosters, so the symptoms were relatively mild but nevertheless troublesome.

  8. So sorry about the COVID news, I think we are all going to get it in the end, it seems to be making sure that it is around continuously and keeps having new variations (sigh).
    Lovely set of photos.
Sorry I have not been visiting, just not enough hours in the day at present.
    Cheers Diane
