The Eastern Screech Owl (Megascops asio) is a small owl that is relatively common in Eastern North America, from Canada to Mexico.
This bird has a regular roost in a public park near Waterloo, Ontario. I wonder how many people walk past it each day and done notice it. If the truth be told I only saw the bird on my second visit to the site - and then it was so inconspicuous that we almost missed it.
I did hope that it would oblige me by opening at least one eye at some time - but no.
So, these are sone shots for a rather still owl!

That happened to me in Arizona with a western screech owl in a dead saguaro. Was within 10 feet of him and could have walked right past him, although he was watching me.

ReplyDeleteThey certainly are inconspicuous. In New Mexico I led a group of young children on a nature hike. We saw a (western) screech owl with eyes closed, similarly resting at the nest hole. Suddenly an emergency vehicle siren sounded and it popped both eyes open. The kids were delighted. Their teacher had them draw something they saw on the walk, and every one had the owl with the big open eyes.
