The most famous hole in the world.

Eventually I was bound to end up at the Grand Canyon.  Once I had found out that I could do a day trip from Scottsdale to the Grand Canyon the die was cast; I was going.

The first thing that struck me at the time was just how close you needed to be to the canyon before you saw any of it all - for something that huge it is very well hidden!  And then it was just there.  Boom.

All of these pictures are taken from the south rim, mostly from the rim walk near Grand Canyon Village.

I'm still wrestling with the words to use in my other blog about seeing the Grand Canyon - I'll get there eventually I suppose!

So, here they are.  The light was really hard, changing second by second, rather than minute by minute.  There was pouring rain, snow, wind and rushing clouds.  It was remarkable.

I could have stood and watched all day - but I had a tour bus to catch - maybe next time I'll just be able to stand and look.

You can find more pictures from around the world at Our World Tuesday.

  1. Beautiful!!! I'll never forget the very first sighting of the canyon as we drove from the park gate to the massive crevice in the land!! I was speechless. What I won't forget are the shadows that constantly change as the clouds roll by along the canyon and rock...it's awe inspiring!

Your photos bring back lots of fond memories Stewart

  3. Yes, next time you go spend an entire day! The Canyon is one of my favorite places, the view from the bottom is staggering. My first rim to rim hike I took over 300 photos and that was with a film type SLR! I really hope someday you will come back.

  4. What? You didnt ride the donkies down to the bottom? So what if there was snow and ice and rain ... you have to ride the donkeies to the bottom. Now you will have to come back for sure.

All joking aside, your pictures are marvelous and taken from a vantage point that is not the common postcard shot. I love seeing the Canyon from another perspective and leave it to you to be the one to show it to me. I do agree with your other commenter that seeing it from the bottom really gives you a better sense of it's enormity. I am so glad you were able to see it ... A trip to Arizona without an excursion to the Grand Canyon is unheard of. Thanks, Stewart, these are really nice. Made my day ...

  11. You got some fantastic shots. I've been there twice in my life. Once when I was almost 7 and again in 1994 when the family spent 6 weeks camping across the USA.

  16. I remember, I had the same thought, how it's invisible and then so dramatic when you get close. Your photos are interesting.

  17. Yep, words are kind of superfluous. But if anyone can do it, you can. Gorgeous pictures. It has been way too long for us. The Southwest (Arizona, Utah, Colorado) are all just full of wonderful parks. Come back and stay longer!!

  29. Those views are spectacular! We camped at Grand Canyon Village for three nights during our RV trip through Arizona last year. I saw my first California Condors from that vantage point over Battleship Rock.

  30. BEAUTIFUL photos Stewart! Not only does the lighting change rapidly, so do the colors. It's very hard to take a photo that does justice to the size and scale of the place. Heck, it's hard to describe it. I've been there many times and I'm still in awe whenever I see it.

  31. Wonderful images, Stewart!
It really is quite a sight isn't it?? When I visited as a 15year old, I can remember the vastness literally taking my breath away and going home to show of my MANY images and continually saying that the photos didn't do it justice. Even from a great image it's hard to appreciate the vast expanse that is the Grand Canyon. It must be seen to be believed.

  35. Hi Stewart,
(and I've spelt your name correctly this time. Again my apologies for having not done so before)

And now I'm stumped for adequate words for the way you have portrayed the Grand Canyon through your photos.
One thing I do feel is they are definitely a series that stand alongside with the best I have seen of the Grand Canyon.

Then your words describing the light, rain, snow, wind and rushing clouds flowing through my thoughts as I viewed the images felt magical. Combining that with your description of just suddenly there it all is.. the impact would have been stunning, emotionally transporting, and physically almost overwhelming.

I can really appreciate its name Grand now a lot better. I think such a small big meaning word is all that is required, the rest just happens, and truly defines the meaning of Grand.

Thank you for this really impact sharing.
    Truly a beautiful experience.

Thank you for the visit, deeply appreciated as always
