These birds are Crimson Rosellas - Platycercus elegans - which means Elegant Broad-tail, which does seem to miss the point somewhat!
These birds are about 35 cm long and the male and females have very simulate plumages. The multi-coloured birds here are all juveniles of one sex or another. I wont make a fool of myself by trying to sex either the adult birds or the juvs!
These pictures were taken very close to the accommodation we stayed in at Wilsons Prom (yes this post is from there again!) and although there are clear instructions all over the place not to feed the birds it was clear they were looking for a meal. These chaps are cleaning up the mess left behind after cutting up some explosively crusty burger buns!
You may be able to tell that it was a little damp just before I took these shots!

ReplyDeleteWhat is it about the color red that is so stunning ... I could sit and drool over these beautiful Crimson Rosellas forever ... even the juveniles look like abstract art. I agree, you win an award for the most colorful birds. I will probably live my lifetime without seeing this bird or anything close to it in the wild ... but I haven't given up yet. Someday soon ... I hope to be going to Thailand next February for my son's Thai Wedding ... I am guessing they have some colorful birds there. (Wish I could skip down to Australia on this trip, but the money is limited.) I'm not giving up on that possibility though ... all I have to do is live long enough and I will get there :) Cheers, Stewart ... great WBW post :)

I was trying to do it in the train from my IPad and I thought I had done it. Eileen ttells me it is possible and this is the second time of trying. It uploaded a picture for me, put it in the place provided and I filled everything in. it said it was DONE. Fortunately I went in to click it myself and discovered just as train was getting to the station, it did not take you to my web page and I made a VERY quick email to you before the train moved off!! Now tht was a close call to missing seeing Aida from ydney Harbour. it was astonding. I wish I could get this to work because if I could, I perhaps ast time could leave my lapopt at home and work from my IPad asI schedule myposts in these days. Anyway, many thanks.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful shots of the Rosellas. I am always amazed at the variety of colours they have. Our Adelaide Rosella is a variation of the Crimson and we get colours ranging from pale yellow through orange and crimson. Beautiful birds.
