Wild Bird Wednesday 402 - Dusky Moorhen

The Dusky Moorhen (Gallinula tenebrosa) is a widespread bird, being found in Australia, India, New Guinea, Borneo and Indonesia.  It's common in my part of the world, and you can be almost guaranteed of seeing some in any swampy or damp area.

They are not as splendid as the Swamphens, but they do have a certain rustic charm!

  1. Good photographs of the Dusky Moorhen. On my walk today I saw a pair of our UK Moorhen really fighting tooth and nail. Thanks for hosting and hope you and your family are well.

...this morning, an enormous bumble bee, all fresh and bright and big-eyed, flew in our kitchen window. So very handsome and unconcerned by anything other than finding a nook for a nest. Somehow it raised the spirits inordinately... and the sight of these little water hens added to that lift. Ta. YAM xx

  7. They look at home amid the rushes. I still call our local species "Common Moorhen" even though we do not have any "moors" here in the USA.

  13. Hi Stewart. I can imagine many UK twitchers getting very excited about a Dusky Moorhen. Sadly, not I.
