Doors, details and pigeons.

These shots are all details from the west front of Wells Cathedral in Somerset in the UK.  This was my local "town" as a kid - and as such I was rather blasé about the quality of the architecture.

I think I will add some more shots tomorrow showing the whole building.

You can find more macro style shots at Macro Monday 2 and I Heart Macro.

  5. Such detail. I wonder how long it must have taken the stone masons and sculptors to create such wonders.

  6. You know the saying, "familiarity breeds contempt", or at least benign neglect. We simply don't pay attention to our surroundings so much as children, I think.

  7. Oh, to grow up near architecture like that!! Some say we have to move away or distance ourselves in order to fully appreciate what we always knew. Whatever the case, your appreciation shows in your photos now. :)

  10. Fascinating recessing of the walls to highlight doors or statues. And love the grainy wall textures too.

  17. Your photos show so well the beautiful stone carving and decorative arches, and still in such great condition. The stained glass windows would look lovely inside too.

  18. Beautiful details...lovely to see both this and the post above together! The fun of catching up. I see now that Wells was your nearest shopping town, not your actual hometown. I'd still rather visit your hometown than mine, which didn't have any neighbors as beautiful.
