Wild Bird Wednesday 475 - Parrots

Thought I'd start this WBW with a few brief quotation from two of my favourite books:

“It never hurts to keep looking for sunshine.” - Eeyore ('and parrots', he meant to add I'm sure)

“Nobody can be uncheered with a balloon.” - Winnie the Pooh (although I think he meant to say 'parrot')

“After all, one can’t complain. I have my friends.” - Eeyore ('who like parrots too' he added)

And with that, here are some parrots.

Crimson Rosella

Gang Gang Cockatoo

Little Corella

Major Mitchell's Cockatoo

Mulga Parrot

Musk Lorikeet

Northern Rosella

Rainbow Lorikeet

Orange Collared Lorikeet

Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo

Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo

Splendid birds.  Its spring.  I need to get my act together.  Lock-downs be dammed.

Wild Bird Wednesday 474 - Whiskered Tern

Well, this has not been a great week.  We have now had over 200 days of lockdowns as a result of COVID, in 6 separate blocks.  Curfews, travel limitations and restrictions on the number of hours you can spend exercising - two in my case.  I'm sure you are fed up with these rather gloomy starts to WBW - and so am I.

In the gap between the last two lockdowns I managed a trip to Werribee - which is always a good thing, but its even better in summer!  I did get rather excited when I first saw this tern - but on closer examination it turned out to be a Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybrida) in non-breeding plumage. These pictures are a bit of a symphony in grey!  But I did like the challenge of getting even half decent pictures of this bird in less than ideal conditions.

Wild Bird Wednesday 473 - King Parrot

Hi there - still in lockdown here, in fact it has been extended until at least 2nd September.

So, these are King Parrots (Alisterus scapularis) a wonderfully colourful parrot found down much of the east coast of Australia.  These pictures were taken a long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. Or more accurately, near Lorne in Victoria in 2019 - which amounts to the same thing at present!

Wild Bird Wednesday 472 - Australasian Swamphen

Well, I am back in lockdown, and although I know it's the best thing we can do until we have high vaccination rates, I cant say that I am very pleased about the situation.  I was actually driving away for the weekend when the announcement was made.  As the Sat Nav said "route recalculation".

These are Australasian Swamphens (Porphyrio melanotus) found in Australia,  New Zealand, PNG and Indonesia.  These birds live in a small wet-land that is (happily) inside my lockdown travel zone so I was able to spend a bit of time there this weekend.  (I also saw two dog fights, a bicycle accident and a near fight as a result of the accident - in the end I just went home!)

I really like these birds.

Wild Bird Wednesday 471 - Black Swans

Black Swans (Cygnus atratus) are a common sight in Australia - assuming you can get out of your house!

These birds we just loafing around in the sun at Werribee last week - and I happened to find them in one of the few bursts of sunshine that broke through the clouds on Friday.  That was my first day out in a while and I have to say even if the birding was quiet by the normal standards of the site, it was great to finally get out again.
