World Bird Wednesday - Australian Pelican.

Last weekend I took a trip down to Queenscliff - that's a couple of hours west of Melbourne. Its an old fishing town that now earns its living mostly through tourism - which must be a familiar tale around the world.

There is a boat ramp just out of town, and at the top of the ramp is a light pole, and at the top of the light pole was a pelican.

I'd seen this bird - or at least one that look like this one! - there before, but this is the first time I managed to get any decent pictures.

You can find more world birds here, and you can see the latest post on my other blog by clicking the Paying Ready Attention link on the RHS of the page.

Enjoy the birds.

Great shot!! He's such a funny (but cute) looking bird. Love the shots of the marsupials, but couldn't you have "thrown in" a koala just for the heck of it?? They are just too cute!! Mickie :)

Great photos of the pelican, love that last one! It's such an exotic bird to me, I have seen them twice, one in The US and once in Australia.

Nice photos Stewart. We haven't had as many pelican up this way recently - I think they have all been on the wetlands in western Qld.

Isn't it funny how pelicans love perching on these light fittings? I have dozens of pictures of them against the light or cloudy skies. I'll have to post some for skywatch.

We have a lot of pelicans here (coastal California) - they look so odd and ungainly on the ground, but they fly in beautiful formations, like a wave in the sky.
