Wild Bird Wednesday 189 - Emerald Ground-dove

Back to Lord Howe this week.  For a bird that is 'often seen wandering nonchalantly about the forest and roadside' (according to the local guide book) I found it hard to get really good shots of this bird.  I think I would have replaced 'wandering nonchalantly' with 'frantically dashing' and 'often behind grass'!

Anyway, this bird is a Emerald Ground-dove (Chalcophaps indica). It is about 25cm long and you can see why it's called emerald.

I have been actively looking for new bird bloggers through twitter - so, if you see any new names on the link up could you make a big effort to hop over to their blogs and say hello!

As ever, click the blue button to join in.  SM

What a gorgeous dove! We have Mourning Doves and Eurasian Collared Doves here, but neither of them are this colorful so great to see this different bird!

Wow Stewart your Emerald Ground-dove is beautiful. We have Emerald Spotted Doves in Africa (and parts of South Africa) but I enjoyed reading about your stunning beauty. Thanks for hosting this meme. I'll link up tomorrow (Wednesday). Greetings Jo

Oh my, Stewart ... I love doves and my favorite color is green. This is indeed a gift. Never knew there was such a beautiful Dove, but it has just been put on the top of my list of favorites. As for Frantically looking for new Bird Bloggers on Twitter ... you should just be patient and wait until you are old like me, then everyone's name looks like a new blogger every week, Ha! I hope you have luck finding new followers because there is so much to be learned by visiting your blog and more people should have that opportunity. Good to be back from Thailand. Didn't get to see many birds. They were there, we could hear them, but the canopy was so thick we could never find them to take pictures ... :( It was a wonderful trip anyway.

I am absolutely amazed at a green dove! Stunning. I don't remember if you said before, but did you camp on Lord Howe? Or is there a hotel? (I would absolutely love to see these wonderful birds, but I know myself well enough to know that I'd need a bed and halfway decent food, no matter how wonderful the birding.)

What a beautiful dove! The emerald green is quite striking. Had to chuckle at your correction of the description.

We have doves around here, but NONE of them are green. It is a beauty! Same thing goes for your photos...

If only our Collard Doves had a little more colour to them, I could probably learn to love them a little more. Great looking bird.

That one is a bit of a stunner SStewart. Emerald it certainly is and a cut above the average looking dove or pigeon.
