Wild Bird Wednesday 11 - White-Eared Bulbul

This is one of the few other birds I was able to get a shot of when I was in Dubai - last weeks flamingos were the highlight - but this was one of the birds I saw the most of!

Given that the temperature were VERY high I was rather pleased to get any pictures of anything!  Its hard to focus with sweat in your eyes and taxis stooping insisting that you need to be rescued!

This is a White-Eared Bulbul.  Its not the most remarkable bird in the world - but there is a good story attached to it.

The arabic for bird is pronounced "bul",  so this is a White-Eared BirdBird!

There, now you know!

To join in with WBW 11 you just need to click on the link below! Enjoy the birds!

  2. Sweet little bird!
Hope you're not so warm any more like in Dubai, when taxi-drivers wanted to resque you! Can't imagine the warmth there though!

  4. Sorry!
Do not think that Google translate translated correctly.
    It should read:
Do not think that we have this bird in this country.

  5. I like the reeds (?) he's perched on. Makes it look like he's sitting on a really large open weaved basket. :)
I'm glad the taxi drivers were at least watching out for you Stewart.
    Lovely shots of the BirdBird!

  6. Beautiful shots of this bird bird Stewart. :-) It's amazing some of the things we do for our photos. I know my camera has coaxed me to do things which I wouldn't do in the past... like melt in the hot sun, or go on huge Ferris Wheels. All in good fun.

    Have a wonderful week!

  8. I agree with Debbie ... at first glance I thought it was a chicadee ... but, I love the little BirdBird. He is adorable, also like a Chicadee. Nice post Stewart. It would seem your Dubai visit was well worth while.

  12. bet you were glad to get away from the heat Stewart; sounds a little arduous. Glad you managed the bul-bul photographs though; I remember them (though not white-eared) in my childhood years. They are still around inner-parts of Sydney but I never see them here on the coast

  13. Photos of a new bird are certainly well-deserved when you are willing to go out in heat like that!

  14. I can only imagine how hot it is there! Been there with the sweat in the eyes situation. Ugh! But you got a cute little bul there. He reminds me of a black capped chickadee!

  19. Ha! There's a birdbird I have seen! :) It's found in India too! Nice pictures.

Bulbul, I believe is a word of Arabic origin (used in Hindi too) - although it means some kind of a songbird. (I am not sure)

  22. You left me in the air there Stewart, now I need to Google your bulbul. the only wet faces I get lately are from the constant rain - more if I go beyond Lancaster or Kendal and too near the Lake District.

  23. Hi Stewart,
I answered your question on my blog but came back here to tell you as well that the swan in my post is a Trumpeter Swan. When we took our Granddaughters to the Columbus Zoo there were a couple there in a natural setting.
Hope you're having a great day.

  27. I thought it was named after Abdul Abulbul Amir!

There's a tomb rises up where the Blue Danube rolls,
And graved there in characters clear,
Is, "Stranger, when passing, oh pray for the soul
    Of Abdul Abulbul Amir."
