Wild Bird Wednesday 424 - Honeyeaters

There are a large number of honeyeater species in Australia - some common and widespread, other restricted to just a small area.

When I was in Darwin a life-time ago I spent some time near some flowering shrubs, which were busy with honeyeaters of a number of species.  They proved pretty hard to photograph as they were fast moving and generally pretty busy!

These are some of the better shots I managed for the birds.  I rather wished that I had had my tripod with me - but as usual the bit of kit you need is the bit you left in the car!

We have been given a 'road map' out of of current lockdown situation - so with luck we can navigate this and I can get out birding again!

  1. There are myriad attractions for a visiting birder, Stewart, but surely high on the list would be the profusion and the diversity of honeyeaters. And one can barely pass a day without seeing one or two species, and with a dedicated search, several. How wonderful it all is.

  6. Love these birds and they are so pretty. I hope that all improves there very soon and you can get out. Cases are going up here again, generally though, it is people that have either come here on holiday or people returning from other places. Best to stay put for the time being. Keep well and stay safe, Diane

  7. Nice images of the sampling of honeyeaters. I carried a tripod into the field only once after I moved to Florida. I almost collapsed from the heat. I switched to a monopod but have since tossed that. Now am traveling lighter and relying on image stabilization and stealth (and soft photo effects).

  9. Beautiful series of the honeyeaters...I never bother with a tripod even when shooting the moon!!.Too much trouble and they seem to come out OK....for me anyway..Hope you can get out soon..We can be out as long as we do the masks and social distancing which only some people pay attention to..Probably after Labor day and crowded beaches the count will go up again...Too many people are not taking this seriously..It will be around forever..Stay safe..

  13. What pretty birds they are! I really appreciate virtual birding more than ever lately as in my real life it has been quite sparse. Of course your birds here today , as most of your birds, are ones I would only ever see virtually . And I love having the chance to learn about them.
