Wild Bird Wednesday 462 - Red-Rumped Parrot

The Red-rumped Parrot (Psephotus haematonotus) is a common enough parrot in my part of the world.  I often see them in small flocks on sports ovals, golf courses and other such grassy places.  Despite being rather colourful,  they can be hard to spot in longer grass - and many of the times I see them they are heading off into the distance just after I  have flushed them!

However, when I was at Patchewollock a month or so back a flock came into the bird table / water feature in the yard.  I never thought otherwise, but they are a wonderful looking little bird - and for once in these pictures you can see why how they got their common name.

  1. Very colorful indeed! They look petite, more like a parakeet. We are just putting away the masks for outdoors and many shops and restaurants. Although we are vaccinated we do keep wearing them in public indoors locations, as many people may feel uneasy, not knowing whether you are safe or one of those (many) anti-vax screwballs who will only change their minds when a relative dies of COVID 19.

  5. These budgies are very beautiful. I met them in Yarra Ben Park. They were a little family.
I would like to live with the parakeets.
    Have a nice day.

  10. What a pretty bird!

In Virginia, we have dropped the mask mandate for fully vaccinated people except in healthcare and crowded settings. Our cases are down, at least for now. I have some concerns about variants and about the carelessness (and ignorance) of some people. I hope things improve for you soon.
