Wild Bird Wednesday 163 - Reflecting on Sooty Oystercatchers

Although I have some images from my trip to the UK left to deal with, I thought I'd base this post a little closer to home.

These are one of my favourite birds - Sooty Oystercatchers.  These shots were taken on Norman Bay Beach at Wilsons Prom the week after I got back from the UK.

I'm not going to say much this week as I am busy with life and stuff!

So, I hope you enjoy these pictures - not only are they of a bird I really like, I am also pleased with the way I was able to capture the bird and its reflection.

My trousers got rather wet and sandy taking these pictures - oh, the lengths I will to!  Let me know which one you like most.

Now it's your turn - click on the blue button and off you go.  SM

  4. I like oyster catchers ... And the fact that this beauty has been banded twice. I like the one where he's shaking a leg the best....probably just what you did when you finished wading.... Thanks for hosting. I want to make a joke about living life instead of blogging, but Seriously im just glad that you continue to find time for this amidst your real life

  6. Hello Stewart, I love all the Oystercatchers. They are cool birds, I see this one is wearing ankle braclets, lol. Great reflections and photos. Thanks for hosting, have a happy week!

  7. I liked all the photos. As for favorites, that is a tough call. Number 4 with the extended leg shows the best action. #3 has a very interesting mirror-image reflection. However #2 seems to depict the bird in the best "field guide" pose. So there you have it! Thanks for sharing and best wishes for all the other good things going on in your life!

  18. So glad you are finding time to do life and stuff... It is allowed you know, you don't have to apologize for it. This is a lovely bird ... one of my favorites that you have photographed in the past. I like the balancing act the best, though I really do think all the shots are excellent. He/she does make a exemplary subject. So is he looking for oysters in the sand or do they eat other creatures as well? And you needn't complain about wet, sandy trousers ... there is no greater pleasure than cold sand and cool water oozing through your toes and wet trousers is just an extension of that ... I am guessing it was pure pleasure :)

  25. I like how clear the eye is in the reflection in the first photo, I like the pose with extended leg a lot, too. All are great photos. Thanks for going to great lengths to get these shots to share with us. The contrast of the orangey-red and black make for a striking bird.

  27. I love Oystercatchers or Wong Birds as they're called on Fraser Island. The ones on Fraser Island and along the beach at Teewah up to Double Island Point and all areas further north aren't the Sooty Oystercatchers, though; they are the Pied Oystercatchers.

I loved watching them when I lived on Newry Island...they'd bathe in the shallow pools when the tide was out.
