Wild Bird Wednesday 276 - Silver Gull

The Silver Gull (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae) is basically the default gull in Australia.  From my point of view, about 99% of all the gulls you see here are of this species.  They are, to say the least, but ubiquitous and abundant!

However, on close inspection they are also rather good looking - in that grey palette, with a brighter beak and legs kind of way.

This pictures are probably a little more portrait-like then many of my pictures, as these birds were stood in a concrete car park or on a rather new boat jetty.  Neither of the locations were particularly scenic!

  1. All gulls are rather handsome if we all just took the time to look closer. The eyes often have it. Thanks for the link-up Stewart.

I do miss these daintier gulls; the massive herring gulls and black-backed beasties which frequent the Clyde shores have slightly less appeal... and yet... YAM xx

  4. Fantastic looking gulls. Gull numbers are starting to build on patch, so I will be spending a lot of time looking through them all.

  5. After a while all gulls start to look the same until you take a closer look as you have here. They are a handsome bird and I love the ringed eye and the red beak and feet. We have parking lot flocks here as well ... especially in the Walmart parking lots. They come, I assume, because people like me throw them scraps whenever I have some to spare. It honestly is hard to think of them as a water bird when I see them in a parking lot ... but then they are and they are great fisherman as well as scavengers. A good set of pictures, Stewart :)

  6. They do look sleek and polished and your wide aperture blurs the background and frees the image from the distractions. Nice to take a closer look at common species and enjoy their beauty.

  10. I love seagulls...except when I'm outside eating and they try to steal my food! Yours look quite similar to ours...I think ours have more grey and black...they're actually California's state bird!!!

  11. I think seagulls unite the world. You can probably find them on every shore in some form, they are such great survivors. And they are truly beautiful birds. Having an argument with the gulls for your dinner is much easier than taking on pelicans (they're scary).

I was prepping some artwork this morning featuring some seagulls, so its a theme for today now :D

Lovely photos, thankyou for sharing and hosting this blog party :D

    Best wishes,
    Liz

  12. Hi Stewart, I don't mind the portrait-like photos; these are beautiful images of very special [to me] birds in the avian world. I have my very, very best image ever of a gull - taken on holiday two years ago. Thanks for hosting this meme. Have a great day. Jo

  18. They are quite handsome with their red stockings accenting the silver/gray. I like gulls, even the ones with plain black legs that we have around here. They're definitely opportunistic feeders which I find interesting.
