Wild Bird Wednesday 293 - Torresian Crow

I'm going back into my older images this week - these are some shots I took 2016 when I was in the Northern Territory.

Australia has a selections of corvids - and in some places they can be a bit of a challenge to tell apart. They are basically 'black crows' - even if most really are ravens with just a few slight differences.

These birds are Torresian Crows (Corvus orru) - and I am confident of that as these were taken near Darwin, and they are the only species of this type that occurs in that area.  In other parts of Australia I would be far less confident.

I like the pictures of the bird with the rocks (not rooks!) in the background as the colours are a real taste of the geology of the area.

  3. Crow is such a common bird that I never took pictures of it. And here are your pictures of the Torresian Crow and I can't take my eyes from them. I like how this bird looks at you in the first photograph. I like it on the rocks and I smiled when I saw a photo when this bird is looking up. Great photographs, Stewart!

  4. I do like birds with good clear eyes. Makes a good target for the camera. they seem to share the liking for habitat our Chough favours.

  6. I really like the composition of the third photo, on the massive rock formation. We have American Crows and Fish Crows here in south Florida. The latter species is more common, a bit smaller and with a distinctive call. If they are silent they can pose an ID challenge.

  7. Crows are interesting birds but yours are black the same as ours are here. I really like the South African pied crows. Cheers Diane

  13. The colours of the rocks are simply stunning. I am sure that Australia must be a geologist’s paradise. As for the Torresian Crow, it always helps when dealing with similar species when you are in an area where only one species is found!

  18. Ha ... another never heard of bird and a crow at that ... he has the usual intelligent look about him. Love the one with his head twisted around. Makes you wonder what he is thinking :) Izzi is playing with her soft Frisbee in the picture ... she wishes it was cheese. Like your Freda, she and all of our critters (especially Buffy the newest one)are food thieves. They act as though we starve them and in order to survive they have to scavenge food. Of course if you saw how fat the boys are, you would know better. Love your Torresian Crow and the rocks in the background are impressive. Just another bucket list item to add to my list :) Be well, Stewart ...

  22. We have crows in our area in the province, and i hate them actually. They prey on mothers'free range chicks and eggs. They also snatch the oriole's eggs or sometimes chicks which ensue a real big air fights, the orioles are very noisy in these fights. And these crows also make holes on young coconuts on trees to drink the juice in there, they are real pests here! But we don't know how to eradicate them, they are said to be most intelligent of the birds.

  24. I have yet to explore this family of birds. We encounter them all the time, yet I haven't put the time in to work out the differences between these beautiful black birds. You have some gorgeous photos here and I love your comment about the rocks, I'm a bit of a fan of geology myself :D

Thanks so much for sharing and hosting this blog hop.

    Best wishes,
    Liz

  25. You know I love an old crow.... my limp guy is still around. As a matter of fact...he has to stay in Calgary over the winter...it has been a bad one this year with cold and very deep snow...I hope when it comes time to hang around our house I see him again. He comes in spring and hangs out in the tree across the street waiting for his Missus and the kids to come home from the U.S. where they fly to for the winter. He can't go because of his bad wing... it is a very long way aways.....
