Macro Monday - Swamp Tiger

Busy week here in changeable Melbourne – so have resorted to archive mining!

This rather magnificent butterfly is a Swamp Tiger (Danaus affinus). It was common in of all places a swamp (!) on Magnetic Island. For all their commonness, it did take a while to get a half decent image. It can be found in a thin strip up the Queensland coast and a few places in the Northern Territory.

For anybody wanting a relaxed and low key holiday which is free from Theme Parks and such like I would highly recommend this island.

You can find more macro shots here at Macro Monday.

Enjoy the close ups!

How many different species are there in Australia?

Take care and just to let you know it is very cold and wet in England at the moment.

  8. Archive mining is more than fine when the yield is this lovely. I hope to "catch" some butterflies this winter (since we're in Florida).

  9. Butterflies and moths - lots of beauty packed into small fragile packages that too many people don't bother to notice. Nice picture.

  13. Lovely butterfly! I know it takes a lot of patience to get a decent butterfly photo. I spent hours and hours this past summer trying to photograph some of our most common butterflies--I finally came away with some photos, but it took a LOT of trying!
