Our World Tuesday - Camberwell Station

I’m lucky enough not to have to do anything really resembling a commute to work.  I can drive, or catch the train or even walk if I want.  I tend to vary it day by day.   And although there can be occasional frustrations, I actually like public transport – it’s a physical embodiment of the kind of things I think communities and governments should provide.  It’s a shared experience in a world that tends to keep us apart.
I tried to capture both the speed and the slowness of train travel in these shots – the process of “hurry up and wait” that can come on in the mad hour when we all try to get home.
These pictures were taken a while ago, but I just re-found them when I was sorting out some files.
You can find more images from around the world at Our World Tuesday.
You can find the latest post to my other blog by clicking the Paying Ready Attention image on the RHS of the screen.
Enjoy the pictures.

  1. I do love trains, but have never needed them for commuting back in those days when I worked. I lived in Portland, Oregon when I was working some years ago and we had fantastic public transportation, but I lived only a few blocks from work so I walked or took my car if the weather was bad! Great post as always, Stewart! Have a good week!

  2. Love that first shot, Stewart! The man standing there gives even more sense of motion to the train.

  3. Public transport is the life blood of London and no doubt most other cities. I really love the first photo. What a feeling of speed.

  4. I love trains, train tracks, train stations, and riding trains. I've spent quite a bit of time in Japan and there system is something to behold. It is so busy and the train companies aren't happy if a train arrives or takes off more than a few seconds off schedule. It works so good, that most of the people don't own cars. There is still a lot of cars though! Nice pics...

  6. Those are fun photos and I wish we had decent public transportation in either of the places where we live -- when we used to full-time RV, we loved it when we were able to take advantage of it (when we were parked and staying someplace)..it was great not to have to drive the truck to town. But like too much of the US, we don't have a very good system either where we live in Florida or in Oregon where we spend our summers.

  7. Love that first shot - the sharpness of the man and the movement of the train pulling into the station.
