While I was sitting on the beach, this oystercatcher and chick came running along towards me. This species is Haematopus ostralegus and it looks very similar to the Pied Oystercatcher from Australia.
One day I may find out if much more the geography separates them.
Just next to the path - but protected by a rope fence was an Oystercatchers nest - complete with its camouflaged eggs,
Just as we waiting for the return boat this Meadow Pipit appeared - just in time for a few quick images and then we were off.
lovely oystercatchers!
ReplyDeleteLovely shots Stewart... it's a great place to visit.
ReplyDeleteOystercatchers are beautiful birds. The chick is very cute.
ReplyDeleteGreat photos of the Pied Oystercatchers and very interesting to see how similar they look to ours here in Australia.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful birds.
ReplyDeleteA new oystercatcher for me. Pretty amazing birds. Sounds like a good day. I do not like some of the limitations of being on a boat, but there always seems to be an opportunity awaiting....somewhere:)
ReplyDeleteThe last shot is certainly a keeper. And that OC beak was definitely made for catching something. Pointy.
ReplyDeleteHow precious that you that the oystercatcher and its chick came so close to you, And what an amazing sighting the Meadow Pipit was. I just love LBJ's and your image (although taken so quickly) is beautiful. I'll link my post tomorrow (Wednesday) Greetings Jo
ReplyDeleteThey have very neat looking eggs!
ReplyDeleteWonderful birds, they live, unfortunataly for me, far away on the seaside.
ReplyDeleteHi Stewart! I love the shot of the Oystercatcher's nest and also the one of the Meadow Pipit.
ReplyDeleteI love the Oyster Catchers no matter what side of the globe they are on. These are really nice shots and awesome that you spotted the nest with eggs ... nice camouflage. So I have been waiting all day for "Wild Bird Wednesday" to show up on my dashboard and it hasn't ... then I realize you have posted under your "Paying Ready attention" ... Did I miss something while I was away? Are we not Wild Birds anymore? I will have to take the time to peruse your past posts to see. Hmmmm ... Well, good to be back anyway. Glad all is well with you :)

ReplyDeleteWell, my friend, I have done it. I have nominated you for an award. I know, they take time, but then if you work as hard as you do at having an awesome blog, you deserve some recognition ... at least I think so. You have to come to my blog to pick it up ... I will understand completely if you don't accept it ... I just want you to know that I think you are awesome and that you do spread light in my life :)
