Wild Bird Wednesday 282 - Galah

The Galah (Eolophus roseicapilla), is one of most common and widespread cockatoos in Australia.  They can be found all over Australia, with the exception of some parts of Tasmania.  I still find it remarkable that I often see these birds on the way to work!

Although you may not be able to tell from the pictures, these are two different sets of birds - the first set is on an area of grass near Queenscliff and the second are at a camp ground at Wilsons Promontory.  As you can tell, they often feed on grassy ares where they seem to dig up roots and such like.

  6. They really are quite beautiful and lucky you to have such a common bird. Not to show my ignorance, but how do you distinguish between a cockatoo and a parrot. They seem to look the
same to me, but there's the two different classifications ... hmmm. I admire your luck with getting your kitties to settle in together. Our little wild child has settled down and would love to be with the other kitties, but she left a lasting impression on the other three and they want none of it. Our other female would like to eat Buffy alive, the boys just don't trust her and hiss when she gets close to them. And if they turn to get away from her, the wild instincts click in and she goes after them ... haven't been able to get that resolved, so we have to keep them separated which turns out to be a pain. I'm open to suggestion :)

  11. Hi Stewart, this galah is a striking bird - very robust. Thank you for your condolences. As you can imagine after knowing Grant for 50 years, I will miss him for many many reasons; not least being the best bird spotter in the world. Thanks for hosting this meme. Greetings Jo
