WBW is back on Lord Howe Island this week - although I am in central Australia, many miles from the internet and probably a bit tired after a few days walking!
Anyway, these bird are called the Brown or Common Noddy (Anous stolidus) and they are pretty common on LHI. I was a vert hot day when I took these pictures and the birds were pretty much content to stay still and not get too hot!
I think the bird with the piece of sponge is showing some form of courtship behaviour, although most birds were already deep into the breeding season. Maybe this bird is just an optimist!

Very nicely composed images. Their eyes really stand out!
ReplyDeleteIt is a very beautiful tern, Stewart, and to have them so close is a real bonus.
ReplyDeleteThe blue background shot is lovely. Happy trails!
ReplyDeleteLovely shots, well done. I had to look up why they are called Noddies and found this out, both sexes constantly dip their heads during their breeding display. I have learnt something new, thank you.
ReplyDeleteCheers Diane.
They resemble my Doves so much, Stewart. In fact, when I looked at the photos, I thought Doves....:)jp
ReplyDeletehari om
ReplyDeleteI would put these birds into the 'cute' category! YAM xx
They look like a halfway between blackbirds and doves and some water birds...
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
Thanks
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've seen these before. Very subtle plumage, but handsome.
ReplyDeleteI love the shot with the water in the background. That blue is a perfect backdrop for those birds.
ReplyDeleteInteresting looking birds. So much brown is not common among the birds I see here.
ReplyDeleteThey look like a gull and a pigeon once did the woohoo
ReplyDeleteI agree with the previous comment: they remind me of both a pigeon and a shore bird. Great photos Stewart.
ReplyDeleteThey have the coloring of a dove..sorta pigeon like except for their bills...great pictures..no birdies to share this week..
ReplyDeleteWhen I looked up the Brown Noddy, I discovered we have them here in North America on islands off the coast of Florida!
ReplyDeleteThanks for hosting Wild Bird Wednesday!
Nice photos. Noddy is a cute name.
ReplyDeleteNot a common bird to us, lovely to see your photos
