Three kinds of sky

With a bit of luck I will be out of the "big black boot" which has been wrapped around my damaged ankle for the last month.  After that freedom of a sort beckons.

While I have been a little less than mobile I have not been taking very many pictures, so I have been looking at, deleting and tagging old images.

During this time I started thinking about the kinds of pictures I take - and as I have posted more than a few skies over the last couple of years I started looking at these pictures.

Without being the basis of some kind of photographic monograph I think I can see at a number of different styles of picture in my collection.

1. Pretty skies.

This may not be typical of these types of picture because it contains people.  But the basic idea here is it is the sky itself is the interest.

2. Mood skies

I think the main point of these images is that the sky may not be the central part of the image.  In this case the sky is almost uniform, but the presence of the rainbow and figure (hello, Sal!) and the general tone combine to form the picture.

3.  Skies where the sky is absent or not really the point.

This image works (assuming it does) because of the colour and shape of the chimney, I think the sky is just the colour that makes the chimney interesting.

I think I have been indoors too much!

You can find more skies at Sky Watch Friday.  Enjoy the pictures.

  1. still you are achieving heaps with sorting through your library of photographs Stewart; that's being productive when you're laid low. Neat skies here.

  13. These are great and I like your analysis. Yes, you have been in too long when you start categorizing your pictures, but it is true ... they each represent a different style. Did you know you were so versatile? The first with the "interesting skies" fit Brian King's tip this week perfectly. He said something like having a figure in the foreground helps give it dimension (I am paraphrasing, because my old poop bring doesn't remember detail). And, in fact the smallness of the people in your foreground emphasizes the enormity of the Sunset in all of it's beauty. Anyway ... very interesting Stewart. I enjoyed this :)

  16. We (meaning not me, but the other half of we) have had some experience with that big black boot, so I feel for you (and for your sweetie too, this from my own experience ;>)))). Glad to know you are progressing.

And you've been having fun with past photos and we have enjoyed these posts too ...I always think I'd like to do some sorting of mine in different ways, but you know, there are usually all those new pictures to take. So the good thing from your experience is that you have had time to do that. (But probably just about enough now!)

  19. They are beautiful Stewart, but even just the few minutes of sunset show variations. I've always said sunsets are like fingerprints, they vary by the minute, by the days and season. They are all beautiful even the typhoon clouds!

  20. All three are lovely in their own way.

Hope you get back your mobility soon.

  24. I've been going through photos as well. VERY tedious work...

I also like what I call "a cooperatively cloudy sky." A sky that isn't overly cloudy, but just enough to add to the overall scene.

Before you know it, you won't even be limping!
