Wild Bird Wednesday 123 - Crested Tern

I involved in a wee bit of work travel early this week, so this will be a brief post.

These birds as Crested Terns - Sterna bergii - and they are the tern I most commonly see.  In some ways these are my 'default' terns and I find others by noticing that they are not this one!

They are rather more relaxed than some other birds and give photographers a better chance to get close to them.

I am also very fond of them because I saw some on my very first day in Australia!

The flight shots were all taken near Queenscliff and the birds sitting on the jetty are at Swan bay.

Now its over to you - click the blue button and away you go.

  12. They are gorgeous shots. I really love terns since I saw fairy terns in Midway as a child. They endeared terns to me, but also birds in general!

  17. I love the aerodynamics of the Terns ... they are so swift and sleek. These are beautiful and I am glad to see that the Crested Tern has a crest while the Whiskered Tern seems whiskerless. My favorite is the little cockeyed Tern in the last picture. She(he) is turning her head like my Izzi does when she is trying to make sense of what I am saying to her. You see, even my dog knows I am goofy :) Great shots, Stewart. Hope your busy week went well ...

  32. Beautiful bird!
This week when I woke up in the morning I heard a peep. I thought it was nothing, then I heard it again. I opened the apartment door and saw a little bird (not so little). Probably he went out the window and couldn't climb out. Then I picked up him after three attempts and blurted him out the window. He was so happy!
